Careers News

Delwyn Roberts —

It's been a great term working with students finalising their plans for next year, whether that be leaving school and moving into study or work, or choosing subjects for next year. The world of work is fast paced and forever changing which makes for some really interesting times for our youth.

The Careers Department continues to be open after our senior students have left, so if there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to pop in, email, or txt and we will be happy to help.

A lot of discussions have been around the seven employability skills, which are so important for all students to be aware of and build on as they move through the years at school.

We have just completed our Junior Career Sessions which took place over the last three weeks. Two hours of thought provoking sessions and activities to encourage students to start thinking about the world of work and where their own values, personality traits, skills may ‘fit’ into a workplace or industry. As we all know, we are a long time in the workforce, so by considering our personal attributes when exploring the world of work it often results in a more fulfilled and happy working life.

Some say ⅓ of our life is spent working………..

So it is important to get it right or be confident to make changes when needed.

Toi Ohomai Trades Academy

The year has been a different one for our Trades Academy students, COVID proved to be disruptive for transportation, and classroom learning. But a huge congratulations must go to all students for hanging in there and giving it your best shot. We have had some awesome results this year.

Lifeskills

We recently had a graduation luncheon for the Life Skills class, Sue from Taupo Pathways arrived with pizza and ice cream for the students. Certificates were awarded to students who had successfully completed the Licence to Work programme. All students have developed their knowledge in the transition between school and work, participated in the voluntary component and also the work experience placement. Well done to you all you have worked hard.

Gateway

As we head into Term 4, a lot of Gateway placements are coming to an end. Students are happy to be back in the class working hard to gain any extra credits they may need towards NCEA. A whole day out of class per week means students have to balance out their workload and catch up where needed. Our Gateway students have been great at self management this year.

In the last week of Term 3, Gateway put on a pizza lunch shout to thank our students for their hard work and dedication to the programme. It was also a day to celebrate Logan Hume’s last day.   Logan was such a motivated and hardworking student during his placement that he has now been offered full time work leading into a building apprenticeship. Go Logan! And a big thank you to his amazing employer Haimes Building for taking on our Gateway students year after year.

Several of our Gateway students have managed to get part time work, apprenticeship offers and school holiday work through their Gateway placement. It’s a great door opener for employment. We thank all of our amazing employers for giving our students an amazing opportunity.

Thank you from your Careers Team
