Brooke Waldram —

Last week the 2019 exec group and our dean Ms Smith headed out on ‘The Leader Ship’ for a week long adventure to Great Barrier Island. There were plenty of laughs, challenges, new experiences and a whole lot of banana cake. Throughout the course of the week we spent time with our instructor doing activities that included kayaking, coasteering and high ropes that focused on pushing us out of our comfort zones as well as developing our communication, teamwork and leadership skills. Abseiling and team rock climbing were more fun challenges that tested us both physically and mentally. These activities involved a few slips into the waterfall and were spent convincing members of the group that they weren’t going to fall out of their harness and getting others not to move their feet when not supposed to, leading to plenty of laughs. We finished the week with a two night tramp, which was both challenging and fun. We made it to the top of countless hills to see some stunning views, only to be interrupted by a spot of hail. Unfortunate timing but it turned out to be a great excuse for a Timtam break. The weather didn’t dampen our spirits, but did lead to a few slippery descents which for some of us were easier to tackle with the ‘sit down and slide method’. At times we may have got a bit lost and took a few slips and tumbles, but we saw plenty of amazing sights and had heaps of fun despite the rain. It was a great way to get started working as a team and we are all super excited for next year. Thank you to Ms Smith for making this awesome experience possible!
