Gateway

Terms 1 and 2 have been busy for both the Year 12 & 13 Gateway classes. A majority of students have been placed in various job opportunities and others will start their placements soon. All Year 13 students have completed a First Aid Course (4 Credits), and this week finished a Health and Safety Course (11 Credits). Year 12’s will complete similar courses later in the year.

Our students are engaging in a variety of assessment tasks including Demonstrating Knowledge of Job Search Skills, Completing a Work Experience Placement, Personal Presentation in the Workplace, Plan a Career Pathway, and Demonstrate Knowledge of a Specific Workplace. Further Unit Standards will be covered as the year progresses. Regular attendance and engaging in the learning material has been an essential component for success in these classes.

The students have been busy going out on their work experience placements. We are lucky enough to have Taupo Funeral Services as a supporter and our student is learning about embalming and other aspects of this industry. We have two girls who are placed in automotive mechanic workshops and are enjoying the environment. We even have a student who enjoys a bungy jump every time he goes!

A huge thank you to all our local Taupo & Turangi businesses who have supported Tauhara College and our students. It's great to see some of these businesses support us for a second time.

Licence to Work

Level 1 Licence to Work students have been working with Taupo Pathways to learn more about employability skills. This involves skills around communication, team work, problem solving, and resilience.

Students in the class are working on employment-based unit standards such as CV, job interview, employment rights, and responsibilities as well as health and safety in the workplace. They are making great progress towards achieving level one NCEA and improving their employability skills.

BOPFA Trades

I am very happy and proud of the feedback that I have received from our BOPFA tutors at Toi Ohomai and Yoobee.

Quote- "Outstanding work ethic, friendly and helpful, a pleasure to teach, amazing skills, positive attitude"

Three-quarters of our students have attendance sitting way above the 80% threshold, so well done to you students. Some decisions will need to be made shortly with the four students who have very low attendance.

SENIORS

The DHB presentations have been finalised with students attending Medicine, Mental Health Nursing, and Psychology sessions at Rotorua Hospital. These have always been really good and give students an awesome insight into these professions.

JUNIORS

We are really excited to be holding the TEC initiative - Inspiring Futures event on Wednesday 31st May for all our Year 10’s. This is a first of its kind in our area, and the focus is sharing inspirational career journeys. Our students have been doing some preparation work in their whanau classes for this event. We have lots of guests coming from all industry sectors, so it is set to be a good, fun, and informative event. Thanks to Tania from Amplify for her support.

A reminder to all juniors, that our careers department is open to students of all levels to come and have a chat, find some resources etc. There are loads of brochures and booklets about different pathways to help you explore.
