Careers News

Delwyn Roberts —

General

I have shared a few photos below of our revamped careers space. We are very excited to have a nice open space to display resources and useful information for our students. If you are visiting the school, please feel free to pop over and have a look. If you would like to make an appointment to talk about pathways, please contact dr@tauhara.school.nz

With lots of planning it's been a busy start to term 2. We have so many fabulous opportunities for students to put their hand up for, so keep an eye out in the daily notices and all the social media sites.

Waikato Uni Open Day - 27th May

Waikato Uni Scholarship Workshop - 8th June, for any Year 13’s applying for scholarships

YWRC - 10th June, Young Workers Resource Centre will be running workshops for students throughout the day. In Ako 2 we will run an open or drop-in centre where ANY student can pop over and talk to them about any employment issues they may have.

Taupo Pathway Connect - 14th,15th & 16th June, local workplace visits for all year 11’s

Connexis - Girls in High-Viz, 17th June, CIVTEC day

Health Pathway Workshops - Year 10 and Year 11, 28th June

Year 12 Students

Toi Ohomai is offering some Sampler sessions mid-June for any Year 12 student considering Toi Ohomai as a study option for next year. They are 1 - 2 hours long and in these areas; Hairdressing, Forestry/Wood Manufacturing, Carpentry, Automotive and Beauty. Please come and see the careers team or register directly on their website.

Year 13 Students

For students who are interested in seeking full-time employment or apprenticeships, please come check out the job board and talk with the careers team, so we can help you navigate this process.

For students who are looking at a Polytechnic or University pathway, please make sure you have had a chat with Mrs Roberts or entered your pathway on Career Central. This is so helpful for the careers team to help you meet deadlines etc - if we don’t know what you are doing, we can’t help you. Most of all, make sure you are familiar with the tertiary website and are meeting all application deadlines etc.

Toi Ohomai Trades Academy

I have received some feedback from Toi Ohomai tutors and it has overall been very positive with comments like: "Is a pleasure to have in class", "Is very mature", "Can work well independently", and "Is learning good work ethic" etc.  So, congratulations to all the trades students who have continued to work hard through some quite disruptive times last term.

It is a timely reminder though to remain focused and attend trades each week.

Gateway

Most students have now completed the Workplace First Aid course and next week there is another Health Safety course.  These are great qualifications to add to their CV’s. We have lots of students out on placement and we are getting really good feedback from the employers. So keep up the good work!

Lifeskills

This class is about to re-start with a fresh focus after the COVID interruption last term and the facilitator not being available for the beginning of this term. We look forward to seeing these students learn and develop some skills to assist in the transition into work.

TopCat Defensive Driving Course

We have seven students attending this on-site course this term and we wish them all the best in making their awareness and driving skills top notch!

As always, please feel free to come and visit the careers department or make an appointment.
