Students Learn to Row

Taupo Rowing Club —

2022/2023 Season

September is the month for Students to learn to row! (Adults, your time is coming soon). These intro sessions are for school students currently Year 8 and above (and for their parents to understand what is involved too).

We need all new student rowers at the same time so that we can teach them the basics together and then integrate them into our existing team training.....so if you are interested to row this summer, then make sure you get along to the Intro morning and bring some friends with you! It's not as many early mornings as you think! This season we aim to get on the water twice a week, ERG twice a week (some afternoons) and undertake some other strength & fitness sessions.

On top of this training we will have a couple of training camps and some regattas representing the Club and your school, these are fun weekends away with other great youth. There are four key parts to the Student Learn to Row Program;

1. Intro Session - Land based intro to the club and rowing with the club, getting to know the boats and how to set them up and learning the basics of rowing on an ERG. 9am, Sunday 4th September at the Sea Scout Ship on the lake front. If it sounds like you'll enjoy it, then come to the next session.

2. On The Water Session 1 - Sunday 11th September, Various Times. We will break those interested into different crews and invite at different times - we will get you on the water in our wide and stable Coastal Rowing boat to be taught the basics.

3. On The Water Session 2 - Sunday 18th September, Various Times. Another session like the above.

4. Training Camp at Mangakino - 4pm Friday 23rd till Sunday afternoon. This isn't compulsory, but recommended to kick start your rowing. This is a shared camp with students from Rotorua Rowing Club for our existing and novice rowers. We will have different sessions on the water, for novice rowers we will be continuing to learn the basics of rowing. These are a fun intro to rowing, there will be plenty of time off the water to chill out with the team. (see some photos from the last camp in the discussion).This is a 'free' program, no membership or ongoing commitment is required. There is a charge for the cost of food and accommodation at the camp (about $90) that all rowers who attend will pay.

At the end of the program we will be looking for students who want to continue rowing to join the club. This enables us to have certainty about forming crews for training and attending regattas (including Maadi this year) so that their fellow crewmates know who they will be rowing with at training and events.

More details about the club can be found at www.tauporowing.co.nz; any questions about the program please email school@tauporowing.co.nz or ask questions within this event tab.

We will shortly be launching a new website, with new registration forms - we will let you know when this is available. In the meantime, please mark that you are interested or going to this event on our Facebook so that you keep up to date with details.

Please also share it with your friends, rowing is a team sport and having a mate along often helps when getting started.
