Australasian Karate Championships

Irena Wanikau —

Tauhara College students trained and competed at the Australasian Championships .  All 5 students did amazing considering the were outnumbered by the Australians by at least 5-1. The results are as follows:

Black Belt Kata: 16-17 yrs Girls - 2nd: Tangiariki 16-17 yrs Boys - 3rd: Matakatea. Women’s State - 3rd: Shania,  Danica, Tangiariki

Black Belt Kumite: 10-12 yrs Girls - 3rd: Mystique 13-15 yrs Girls - 1st: Shania 13-15 yrs Girls - 3rd: Danica 16-17 yrs Girls - 1st: Tangiariki 16-17 yrs Boys - 3rd: Matakatea Women’s State - 3rd: Shania, Danica, Tangiariki Men’s Test Match - 2nd: Matakatea and team NZ Special Awards Danica Bell: Spirit Trophy Danica 13yrs, Shania 15yrs, Tangiariki 16yrs and Matakatea 17 yrs stepped up to fight in the adults division for State Women’s and Men’s Team kumite where Shania drew her fight with a former World Champion and Matakatea won 2 and drew his final fight. The 5 students were also part of the Turangi Karate Kapahaka group who performed for the Australians at the Great Lake Center during the Championship Dinner on Saturday night. All 5 Tauhara College students did their dojo, whanau and school proud and are looking forward towards training hard to make the NZ team selection to compete in next years World Championship in London.
