L1 Geography Trip to Redwoods

Morgan Morrow —

WHAKAREWAREWA FOREST ROTORUA

In week 2 the Level 1 Geography travelled to Rotorua to see first hand the environment of Redwoods Forest.  This is to explore the relationship between people and this cultural environment.

Redwoods forest was planted in 1901 as part of an effort to grow trees suitable for housing requirements. Nowadays the Redwood forest is used for recreational purposes such as Mountain biking, walking, horseback riding, and the tourist attraction “The Redwoods Treewalk”. These activities have consequences on people, the economy, and the environment, this is what our trip allowed us to learn first hand.

A highlight of the trip was doing “The Redwoods Treewalk” night tour which is a 75 metre-tall walk suspended high above the forest floor. The tour is intricately designed to honour and accentuate the stunning natural environment with the use of eco-suspended bridges and platforms.

It was a great experience, the Treewalk is definitely recommended as well as the half hour walk we did throughout the Redwoods.
