CAREERS NEWS

Delwyn Roberts —

General

Our senior students are certainly keeping us busy this term, with lots of opportunities for them, trips away and visitors into the school. It is a very exciting time of their lives, where students start making those big decisions which can often cause anxiety especially as they work closer towards exams. I guess my personal message is, work hard and always do your best, the rest will fall into place. The world of work is rapidly changing and our senior students will have so many opportunities and changes in their working life, resilience to change and rejection, adaptability of skills and the ability to keep learning are so important for their futures.

Lastly, just a reminder, my door is always open to students, parents and caregivers for discussions around future pathways. Please contact me to schedule an appointment.

Gateway

Term two was full of exciting placements from all sorts of industries. Primary School Teacher, Farming, Engineering, Animal Care, Vet Nurse, Computer programming, Hotel Management, Skydiving, Optometrist, Airport security, Motorbike mechanics and lots of Building. A lot of students are coming to the end of their 10 week placement with some so eager they are going to carry on. Providing students continue to work hard and achieve in the Gateway class, some are looking at second placements, so they can weigh up which industry they are best suited for. It is a good time to be reminding students that Gateway is a two part programme and the placement is one part, achieving a minimum of 20 credits in the Gateway class is the other. We offer lots of support around this and it is expected that all students will not have any problems meeting this target. We are very grateful for the support of the community and are looking forward to placing the last of our students for Term 3.

Trades

This term we have 24 students enjoying Toi Ohomai trades academy courses. All are continuing to enjoy there courses and we are starting to see some good results and a few opportunities on offer for next year. These students need to be recognised for their commitment to the programme which takes them out of school for one or two days each week. Most have managed to keep up with their other subjects. So well done to all of you.

We have just received the Trades Academy booklet for next year, and there are some amazing opportunities available, so if you are thinking about Trades Academy as part of your school course next year, make sure you attend our Future Pathways Evening.

Lifeskills

Congratulations to all our Lifeskills students. Everyone has completed their theory work and also 10 - 15 hours of voluntary work. Next step is securing 80 hours of work experience to complete the Licence to Work programme.  All students have been working hard on these aspects while also working on work preparation units standards.

Awesome commitment, well done everyone! And thanks to our teacher Mrs Sharplin and Sue from Taupo Pathways.
