Careers News

Delwyn Roberts —

It was a real pleasure to visit the senior camp again this year, and exciting to think that 2020 will be their last year at Tauhara College. Career appointments will be made with all Year 13 students over the next couple of weeks. They will be given a helpful booklet and timeline sheet to help them navigate the year. The more informed students are, the easier it is for them to make confident decisions. Parents are always welcome to attend these appointments either during school time or out of hours – just let me know. Year 12 and Year 11 interviews will take place after the Year 13's.

We do have lots happening this term, the universities will start visiting in March, Polytechs, and other providers and some guest speakers. We also have our first Vocational Pathway week coming up and the focus is on the Manufacturing & Tech Industries. Later in the term will be the Creative Industries. The easiest way for us to advertise these events is via the daily notices, FB page, School website so keep an eye out for anything that sounds interesting to you and come along !

Gateway

Gateway is a work based program designed to get students more work ready. It allows senior students an opportunity to explore career pathways and across a range of industries and businesses, while they continue to study at school.

Our students are working hard in the classroom to complete CV’s before moving on to job interviews, job search and finance. Students are required to gain 20 credits in class to meet the requirements of the program. These will be general and industry specific standards. Students will also complete a First Aid and a Health & Safety course throughout the year.

Some of our students have started their placements and things are going really well.

Toi Ohomai Trades Academy

2020 Trades is off to a roaring start after a lot of frustration and last minute emails home to families. We must all be aware of the problems that Toi Ohomai face at the beginning of the year, not unlike a school really; with uncertain and forever changing student numbers, tutor availability, transport, working with 30+ secondary colleges etc etc. We have 40 students doing the following courses; Automotive, Land, Hair, Beauty and Retail, Exercise & Sport, Hospitality, Engineering, Construction and Animation. We have another 8 students waiting to start in term 2.

Feedback from both students and tutors so far has been great, so well done everyone! Any problems with transport, course, school work please do not hesitate to get in contact with me. Most issues can be sorted quickly if I know about them. In the next few weeks, I will meet with all the Trades students to evaluate how things are going for them. It is such a fabulous opportunity for those committed students. Attendance is a key part to school life in general but especially important to trades students, as your end of year mark greatly depends on your attendance. Please let me know if you are going to be absent as early as possible.

Lifeskills

Our life skills class are lucky to have Sue from Taupo Pathways coming in each week to facilitate the Licence to Work program. This along with the Unit Standards being taught in Mr Somers class, will give the students extra knowledge and skills for work readiness. There are some exciting activities planned for this year.

As always please contact the careers department if you would like career related information or would like to book an appointment.
