Careers News
Careers
The start of the year has been a busy one for the Careers Department. In the last few weeks we have had visits from Waikato, Massey, Victoria, Canterbury Universities and also Wintec, AUT. Auckland and Otago Universities will visit us in the second term, so please watch out for these. These sessions have drawn large groups of students interested in their future career pathways. Students are interested in what each institution is offering and whether or not it is the right fit for them.
Mrs Roberts has also begun individual interviews for Year 13 students. If you have missed your appointment, or would like to make another one, please come and see the team. The Careers Room is open at all times for students who need advice or information around different career options.
Gateway
Ms Burnett has been busy in her new role working out in the community and we are pleased to announce that we have 12 students already placed for the term. These students have placements in building, primary education, early childhood education, hospitality, tourism, animal care and engineering. Ms Burnett has found that employers have been positive and helpful with requests to place students in workplaces.
Recently a Lifecare course was held for Gateway students and this was followed up with a Health & Safety course at the end of March. Students are encouraged to take these courses and Unit Standards will add to the 20 credits needed for each Gateway students.
Trades
Numbers are now settling down and transport is running smoothly. It is important that students attend all classes and advise both Mrs Roberts and their course tutor of their absences. Feedback from the students has been very positive and they are enjoying the tertiary environment. Parents will be notified if there are changes to classes or transport.
Term 2
Lots will be happening in Term 2. We will be offering campus trips to Universities and Polytechnics. It is important students indicate they are interested early so transport, relief and accommodation (where necessary) bookings can be made. All trips will be dependant on numbers interested.
