Kensie, Katherine, India —

This year the three of us (Kensie, Katherine and India) took on leadership roles as part of the Kids Greening Taupō student leadership team (SLT). Kensie and Katherine took on the role of the co-chairs and India as the secretary. It has been an interesting start to the year with our first twelve meetings on Zoom. As leaders, we have taken a step up to run some awesome meetings with our limited resources (online). We had some exciting activities like quizzes, and nature bingo, and we heard from some interesting guest speakers including Bevan from Total Sport, Robyn from Greening Taupō and Rosanne Jollands from Contact Energy. Next term we'll finally get to meet the whole team in person- we cannot wait!

Other Kids Greening Taupō News:

Our Kids Greening Taupō coordinators- Rachel and Sian were busy over lockdown creating lots of online resources. The Online Nature Classroom was created to connect tamariki to nature and help them to understand the importance of biodiversity. In this online nature classroom, students learn about the unique flora and fauna of Aotearoa and the important roles that each species plays in the ecosystem. Each conservation theme is broken down into five days of activities. Each unit contains hands-on activities, inquiry questions, informative videos, and a fantastic read-aloud book with a follow-up activity. The online nature classroom can be found at this link: https://www.kidsgreeningtaupo.org.nz/online-nature-classroom

Also check out the Nature Connectors- a collection of simple ideas and activities for nature connection in your local green space, backyard, or school. Great for the school holidays! Link here: https://www.kidsgreeningtaupo.org.nz/nature-connectors

Kids Greening Taupō opened up their Take Action Fund this year- a pool of money funded by Contact Energy. The Tauhara College STEAM class applied to this fund, and were successful in their application.

Greening Taupō have already held four plantings this year! We have had an excellent turn out at these and have planted over 6000 native plants so far. The next community planting day will be held on the 25th of July on Wairakei drive at 11am. Our Kids Greening Taupō Student Leadership Team are currently planning our own planting day. This will be coming up on the 8th of August and will be held at Spa Park, 11am-1pm. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks on site for those planting.
