BoP 2022 Secondary Schools Snowsports Champs

Andrea Mertens —

Yay we had a brilliant day on the Mountain!

The Bay of Plenty (BoP) Secondary Schools Snowsports Champs were held on Monday 15 August on the Pinnacles course at Whakapapa. We placed third this year which is a great achievement with a team of 10 skiers and one snowboarder, all of whom are Yr 9 -11 students and most of them new to this competition. We have a young snowsports team which bodes well for the years to come!

On the day, the conditions were a mixture of  soft powdery snow and ice, with sunny skies. Nearly 80 competitors from 10 different schools took the icy conditions and the giant slalom course in their stride. Stella Wyatt placed second (with only 0.1 s slower than the first placed girl), Stevie Manunui fifth, Emma Speedy sixth and Sienna Nepia eighth in the Junior Girls’ category which is a fantastic result - all girls improved on their placing from last year.

The boys also had good results in their races placing as follows: Tahoe McLean 9th, Flynn Harrington 11th, Ezra Apiti and Aiden West 12th equal and Isaiah Apiti 14th. Maz TeWano-Banks competed in the Senior boys Ski and was placed 8th in this category. A fifth placing was achieved by Morehu Wilson who competed in the Senior boys snowboard section for our school.

We are now preparing for our next competition which will be the North Islands for the skiers on Monday 19th Sept and Snowboarders on Monday 26th Sept.

Thank you for the parental support on the day and a special thanks to Ms Lucy Foote who made it possible for the team to go.
