Careers

We have had an awesome start to the year with visits to both Year 9 camps at Whakaipo Bay and also the Year 13 camp. These sessions provided thought provoking activities and information to encourage students to explore work environments and get to know themselves before deciding on pathways.

We are currently working behind the scenes on our new careers programme Career Central which will be available via an app to students at Tauhara College for the start of Term 2.

It is very interactive and we are really excited to be able to have this career tool. Students will have the opportunity to explore skills, personal qualities, interests and look into job areas of interest. We also will be promoting career pathway events and this will be the go-to place for initial careers information for students of any level.

As always, I am available for appointments with students and or parents. Please email with a suitable time and I will get back to you as soon as possible:  dr@tauhara.school.nz

Gateway

45 students have been accepted into this year's Gateway Program. We are looking forward to working alongside these students to help them become more work ready and gain some quality hands-on experience in an industry of their choice. Gateway is a two-part program for Year 12 and 13 students.

The first part is theory based, where students are to obtain 20 Unit Standard credits in the classroom. These come from a variety of work preparation Unit Standards, such as -  CV, job interview skills, job searching, career planning, and financial planning. Several credits will also be obtained from a first aid course and a health and safety course later in the year. These courses are free to students and will look great on their CVs.

The second part of the Gateway Program is a 10 week, one day per week, work experience placement.

We would also like to introduce our new addition, our 9 seater Gateway mini bus. Please wave out if you see us transporting students to and from placements.

Trades Academy

We have 31 students attending a Trades Academy course through Toi Ohomai this year. Courses are L2 Hair, Beauty & Retail, L3 NZCAuto Eng, L2 Engineering, L2 Auto Eng and L2 Agriculture. We are very lucky to have these options available for our students. Early feedback from both students and their tutors have been really positive, so with a bit of hard mahi and dedication all these students will do very well at their courses.

Reminder to all these students to use their timetabled trades class to catch up on any work missed while out on their trades course. Please don’t let yourself get behind.

I popped into Toi Ohomai the other day and was lucky enough to catch up with past students.

Ricki Lamprecht and Donovan Van Wyk. They are both doing a full time Automotive Engineering course this year and really enjoying it so far.  Photos included.

Lifeskills

The Life Skill class are busy with core generic unit standards and all have either written a new or updated an existing CV and are on their second standard. The Licence to Work part of the programme will start in Term 2 when Taupo Pathways tutor Sue will be coming in once a week to facilitate this part of the programme. She will also organise voluntary and work experience placements for these students.

Please get in contact with us if you would like to make an appointment or would like some information on general careers or Gateway or Trades Academy.
