Careers News

Dewlyn Roberts —

General

You may have noticed the department has been super busy with many tertiary providers thinking outside the square and offering zoom type meetings, virtual sessions and expos. It is certainly a new way of getting this information to students, and hopefully they have participated in some of these events. We have no way of knowing who has attended what sessions, so if your students are feeling a little lost or overwhelmed, please send along to the careers department, we are here to help.

‘A problem shared, is a problem halved’

We are starting to see tertiary providers posting OPEN DAY information for next term. Students will hear about these in the first week of next term but here are the dates that have been confirmed so far -

Canterbury University - Virtual Open Day Thursday 9th July

Lincoln - Friday 17th July

Otago - Monday 10th August

Massey - Virtual Open Day Monday 24th August

Victoria - Friday 21st August

Auckland - Saturday 29th August

AUT - Saturday 29th August

Waikato - TBC

We hope to invite Year 13 students to Victoria, Auckland and Waikato. All trips are dependent on numbers and are overnight trips so will incur a cost. Consent forms will be available Week One, Term 3.

Future Pathways Evening - 8th September,  4pm - 6pm

Please mark on your calendar now.  This is a great opportunity for students and parents to come along and talk to teachers about their subject selection for 2021. More information will be out shortly.

InZone Careers Kiosk in our school library

We are very lucky to be able to share this great resource with our whole school. It is interactive, easy to use and provides students with up-to-date information on all six vocational pathways. Students can use this independently or in small groups to explore many different work and study options. It is set up and ready to go, so next time you are in the library please take a few minutes to try it out.

This has been sponsored for one year by Lake Taupo Charitable Trust as part of the He Mauhuri Toa forestry programme. Thank you so much, our students will enjoy using this.

Vocational Pathway Week- Creative

On 15-17th June the Careers team hosted a Creative Industries week. This included lots of information on different jobs roles, study options and successful careers in the Creative Industry.

Students had three activities to partake in:

First was the whiteboard - Students were encouraged to answer questions: ‘ What is creative?’, ‘ How are you creative?’ and ‘What jobs are creative?’.

Next was a guessing game - Who am I?

Students had a list of facts and a picture montage for three separate famous New Zealanders who work in the creative industries.

The answers to Who am I are:

1: Lorde

2: Sir Peter Jackson

3: Kj Apa

And lastly, students had to guess how many lollies in the jar?

This time around a trick was played and the whole container was not full, but instead stuffed with paper. NO student guessed the correct amount, but two students guessed just below. The correct answer was 75.

We also had a Tutor Challenge which was a draw between MACL and MAHS - Waka Points will be awarded for each game.

Thanks to everyone who came into the careers room for Creative Week.

Construction and Infrastructure is in Week 3.

Primary ITO is Week 5 /6

Gateway

Another workplace first aid course was completed with new and improved techniques to deal with COVID-19. Also we had another L2 and a L3 Workplace Health and Safety Course. Businesses have been so receptive to take students in for Gateway placements. Some students are finishing up their 10 weeks at the end of term, with a fresh group starting their first day Week 1, Term 3. Students have been working hard in the class and are well on track to gaining the 20 credits required to complete the Gateway programme.

Trades Academy

Great news for our Year 11 students, their 10 week courses will resume in Term 3. Our students have been patiently waiting and Toi Ohomai have worked hard to make both the Automotive and the Introduction to Engineering courses available next term. Our Year 12 and 13 students courses have continued on and students have been knuckling down and catching up with theory work. Mid year reports are due out shortly and will be shared as soon as possible.

We continue to welcome students, parents and caregivers to make appointments to seek assistance with making plans and decisions about future pathways. Please feel free to contact the department.

Happy holidays everyone!
