Jake Bailey Leadership Talk

Taumata School Ambassadors got the incredible opportunity of being invited to Jake Bailey's Leadership Talk.

On Wednesday the 20th of March, the Ambassadors got the incredible opportunity of being invited to Tauranga Intermediate School. There we listened to Jake Bailey's spectacular speech on his Cancer Journey, which he has shared over 90,000 people worldwide. Firstly he talked us through the symptoms that he started receiving before his Cancer. Then he informed us about all the treatments that he went through in the two long months of his Burkitt Lymphoma cancer (the fastest-growing cancer), his treatments, and his recovery. Afterward, he talked us through Resilience and what it means.

We learned about the four “S” of resilience - 1. Slowing down · 2. Salvaging · 3. Streamlining · 4. Standing alongside.

Slowing Down: meaning to stop and take the time to break the problem into smaller bits.
Salvaging: thinking and focusing on the positives no matter how tough the situation, and could simply be about appreciating or looking forward to the small things. Streamlining: this means problem-solving and being aware of where we focus our mind during hard times.
Standing Alongside means having people there who have your back - “You don’t want to climb mountains alone.”

We also learned that resilience means not giving up, showing grit, taking others with you, and going through tough times with a smile! I'm sure all of the Ambassadors can't wait to use these leadership skills not only throughout the year but also throughout our lives!
