Young Innovators' Awards

Jo Te Whaiti —

Last week some of our talented Tall Poppies headed off to the Young Innovators' Awards and Workshop.

As some may know, the Tall Poppies participated in the Young Innovators Awards competition. In this challenge we had to make a Rube Goldberg machine that had to include popping a balloon. A Rube Goldberg machine is a very complicated machine designed to complete a very simple task.

The whole Tall Poppies class participated in groups of 6-7, and one of our groups got through! That was the Team Spiritz Gender Reveal (Aya, Georgia, Rico, Zak, Lilly, Kaden & Gurang).

As a reward for being selected as finalists, we got to take part in a virtual reality workshop, with the head of Google Education, Suan Yeo. We swam with sharks, visited Rio de Janeiro ,and even went to the colosseum in Rome! Believe it or not the virtual reality headsets were made of cardboard, and we were lucky enough to get to take them home and keep them.

We were also invited to the awards ceremony which was held at Classic Flyers. Sadly we did not win but the teams that did were really amazing and it looked like they put a lot of effort into their projects they definitely deserved to win. The group that won People's Choice was the Gender…. Vender. The groups that won all had a short clip at the beginning so we think we might do that next year too!

At the end of the evening the teachers were invited onto the stage. On the way they each picked a number from a container. On the stage, Suan chose a number between 1 and 18 - he chose 14. That was Miss Holden’s number! She won a high tech virtual reality headset! We are very proud of our achievements but we would also like to thank our teachers for all the effort put in to support us in taking part in this.
