Tall Poppy Poetry

Jo Te Whaiti —

Early in the year we spent some time writing poems.

The Tall Poppies of Tauriko School have been writing Found Poems and metaphor poems as part of the Get NZ Writing challenge.

We have been experimenting with metaphors and we have made some poems with our favourites.

A metaphor is a word or phrase that describes something by saying it is something else it isn't.

These are some good examples:

Aya Birt is the unknown

That swoops and soars

on dark wings.

When I glance in mirrors

a predator glares back.

It's reassuring.

Warm raindrops leaping from the heavens

I curl up to sleep in their embrace

They might be Aya Birt.

Our metaphor poems are about ourselves. For example, in one stanza you would describe something as if it were you.

Here is one:

Charlotte Macdonald is a magnificent herd of cows in the patchy paddock, galloping down the dusty road, with their proud owners on their straight backs.

And when you start the next stanza you would be explaining about something different.

So here is another example:

Charlotte Macdonald is a graceful butterfly

Fluttering in the bright sunlight.

By Charlotte MacDonald

One evening,

A terrible storm,

Thundered, Lightened,

Rain poured in torrents.

Rain and wet weather,

Water dripped,

"I have scarcely had a wink of sleep all night,"

Black and blue!

Positively dreadful!

The photo attached is an example of a 'Found Poem' written by Charlotte Rose. This was written by taking a page from a book and deleting any unwanted words then forming a poem with the remaining selection.

We've had fun being creative with words!
