Robotics in the Tall Poppies

Jo Te Whaiti —

The students in the Tall Poppies have started exploring just what their new robots can do!

After all the Tall Poppies’ hard work with fundraising, we are thrilled to finally have classroom robots. The robots that we have are Edison robots which we can code and program to complete different tasks such as: Sumo wrestling, playing music, avoiding lines and so much more. We do this by plugging a cord from the robot into a computer to start programming and coding using different settings and codes.

To programme the Edison robot we go onto a website called Edwareapp.com.nz and start to programme different steps for the robot to perform. An example of this is getting it to turn on an LED light or play music. We then go onto Scratch, which is a little more complex (and can be a bit harder) where we have more freedom to edit what we do. We also have ‘Python’, which is written coding where we can pretty much write whatever we want it to do.

One of the most popular programmes we have used in our class so far is Sumo wrestling. For this we scan a code *sumo wrestling* and then draw a big circle, place two robots inside and start to Sumo wrestle!

We are having so much fun learning about coding and Robotics in the Tall Poppies’ class!
