An Important Message for Rural Schools - Mycoplasma Bovis (Mbovis)
As many parents and whanau are starting to think about calf club days and pet days, below is advice from the Ministry for Primary Industries that is appropriate for schools. This advice includes useful information about purchasing calves.  We trust that all families bringing calves to Ag Day follow this advice.  If you are unsure or require any further information on Mbovis, you are invited to contact Elizabeth Taylor at the Ministry for primary Industries (MPI).

Any calves that are under movement restriction on surveillance farms will not be allowed to leave a property without a permit. Calves that are under surveillance (undergoing testing and not under movement restriction) are free to move and are low risk for spreading the disease – you may want to consider waiting until testing is complete before making a decision. Calves from properties that have had no contact from MPI are free to move.

If you are looking to purchase a calf, the best action that you can take is to buy animals from the source where as much as possible is known about the animals and their movement histories, and to speak directly with previous owners and sellers.

The following links outline the minimum requirements for managing biosecurity on farm. It is imperative that you  are  aware of our recommendations.
