Spotlight on Sport

Jolene Nelson —

Our Rippa Rugby teams are having a great time out on the fields at Waipuna Park. It is especially great to see our littlest ones so new to school life giving Rippa a go and really enjoying themselves.

Term 1 sports will be winding up shortly with

  • Rippa Rugby finishing on the 29th March,

  • Flippaball on the 3rd April and

  • Tennis coaching goes through to the 10th April for the Year 1-4s and to the 6th April for the Year 5-8’s.

Winter School Sport Terms 2 and 3

Information regarding the winter sport registrations for hockey, netball and basketball are currently being finalised with organisers. Registrations are expected to be open early next week so keep an eye out in your emails for details. Registrations will again be through kindo so payment and registration can be made in the one place.

As something to think about before registrations open for parents, I have a plea going out here  - please give some serious thought to helping coaching or umpiring your child’s school team this winter. There are resources on offer to help assist you with this if you are worried about being a bit of out practice so do not hesitate to get in touch if this could be a possibility and we can discuss how we can help. In term 1 only 25% of our school teams had offers of coaches/managers which makes things difficult in a number of ways for organisers, parents and of course the players.

Events: Pahoia School triathlon

The Pahoia School triathon is being held on Sunday 8th April. This is a great triathlon to take part in and there are some great prizes. Registrations can now be made online at http://pahoia.wixsite.com/pahoiatriathlon and there are a variety of courses for all primary school ages. There are a limited number of participants able to take place so if your child is keen, do get onto signing up.

Additional Winter Sport Options

Winter is a busy time for primary school age sport, however sports like rugby, soccer, netball and hockey are not for everyone. Throughout the term, we are informed of different sport opportunities (hence why you don’t get them all in one go). So in case your child was interested in looking into other options for sport outside of what school offers over winter, below is a summary of a few of the other options out there.

Rock climbing

Rock climbing has grown significantly as a sport recently and it is a great activity to integrate problem solving and being active. Rocktopia, based at the Mount, has set aside specific days and times for coaching clubs for local schools.

  • Where: Rocktopia, 9 Triton Avenue, Mount Maunganui

  • When: Every Tuesday and Friday from 4.30pm to 6pm during the school term.

  • Cost: $100 per term or $10 per week.

  • For further information contact: admin@rocktopia.co.nz or phone 07 572 4920.

Squash

The Dame Susan Devoy Squash Fitness Centre, based at the Corner of Devonport Rd and 15th Ave, holds Junior Club Days and Junior Programmes throughout the term with the intention of encouraging new and aspiring squash players in the game.

For further details on what is coming up in term 2, keep an eye on the http://www.devoysquashandfitness.co.nz/content/Juniors/86.aspx website.

Greerton Marist Junior Rugby
