Year 5 and 6 Lake Okataina Camp

Natalie van Dijk —

On Wednesday 27th of March the Senior School headed to Lake Okataina Camp for a three day camp, and what an adventure we had...

The students were involved in a wide range of activities that were challenging but lots of fun. The activities we participated in were: Kayaking, Fishing, Water Testing, Sketching, Stop Motion, Glow worm walk, Orienteering, Map drawing, Burma Trail, Lip syncing, Wallaby spotting.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who supported us to make this camp a success. We couldn't do it without your help.

Please read some of our Memoirs from camp:

Camp Memoir - Burma Trail
There I was. Heart beating. Waiting. The one activity I had been so excited about, yet petrified of was, about to become my worst nightmare - the burma trail. As I cautiously approached the bush, I heard screams coming from inside. Should I turn back? I thought. No I couldn't, I had to do this now. We slowly and carefully entered the trail. There was complete silence. Not even a cricket made a noise. Suddenly, out of the shadows, came a low booming voice. ¨I want your eyeballs¨ it said. I let out an echoing scream. Then I stopped. I saw a passage leading out of this dreadful place. Trees made way. Trail ended. Relief. I had made it to the end.

Camp Memoir - Kayaking
I stood halfway up the hill listening nervously to the instructors. “You will first need to pull your kayak into the water, once it’s floating you can hop in” they explained. It was now or never. I was ready, the calm, still water welcomed me. I slowly waded through the shallows, as the ombre kayak slid effortlessly into the water. I jumped in, rocking it side to side as the lake glistened. Crystal clear water. Beautiful lake. Serenity.

Fun on the water
I saw tough multi coloured, plastic kayaks bumping into each other.
I saw big yellow paddles swishing through the misty water.
I heard my class saying, ¨Make a raft!¨ as they clashed together.
I heard kids screaming as they tumbled in.
I felt as cold as an ice block when I jumped into the cool water.
I felt terrified as the kayaks set off into the deep, dark lake.
I wondered if I was going to get splashed for letting go?
I wondered if my kayak was going to flip?

The Marvellous Approach
I heard mutterings like, “Don’t shine your light.”, “Turn your torch off.”, “Wow!”, “Ooh!”, “Ahh!”
I heard crickets chirping in the darkness of the rainforest.
I felt thrilled, transfixed at the sight of thousands of tiny lights.
I felt rigid with cold yet fascinated at its iridescent beauty.
I saw flashlights turning on and off all around me, miniature specks glowing, mouths open in awe.
I saw illumination, star-like glows, shimmers and grins on peoples faces.
I wondered, how long do glow worms live for?
