NZ Sign Language Week

Jo Te Whaiti —

To celebrate NZ Sign Language Week we had several sessions learning Sign Language.

Did you know that Sign Language is one of NZ's official languages? It is! Three groups of Tauriko students were fortunate to participate in a  Sign Language taster session. Two groups were made up of Tall Poppy students and a third group was a mixed group of Years 3-6. These students were specially selected by their teacher as they have either been stand-out students in class lately or they are particularly interested in languages.

You could have heard a pin drop as the new signs were being observed and practised. We learnt the alphabet, colours, how to count to ten, the names of some animals and how to ask and answer questions involving all this new sign language. It was amazing to see how many signs were learnt in quite a short period of time.

Special thanks to Tania Purdon and Deaf Aotearoa for this wonderful opportunity. We really enjoyed learning to communicate in another language.
