Tuakana-Teina Time

Jo Te Whaiti —

Our tamariki are learning from one-another at Tauriko School. See what is happening in Tuakana-Teina Time across the school.

The tuakana–teina relationship, an integral part of traditional Māori society, provides a model for buddy systems. An older or more expert tuakana helps and guides a younger or less expert teina (originally a younger sibling or cousin of the same gender). In a learning environment that recognises the value of ako, the tuakana–teina roles may be reversed at any time. For example, the student who yesterday was the expert may need to learn from her classmate today.

At Tauriko School one of the ways we encourage Tuakana-Teina relationships is via a buddy class system. Senior classes are buddied up with junior and middle school classes. Teachers work together to develop opportunities for akonga (learners) to work and learn together.

Check out recent happenings during Tuakana-Teina Time in the attached photos!

Whāia te iti kahurangi
Ki te tuohu mehe maunga rā teitei
Manaakitia
Awhinatia
Pae tawhiti whāia kia tata
He tohu tihei mauri ora
Reach for the stars
If you are to bow
Let it only be to a lofty mountain
Nurture (our students)
To assist and nurture
For within these qualities
Empowerment is born
And thus leads to tomorrow’s leaders
