AIMS Games Cross Country (Tall Poppies)
On Sunday the 8th of September we gathered at Waipuna Park to compete in the Cross Country run.
We were told at the Managers meeting it was perfect conditions for the event, carpet had been laid on the slippery slopes and a tree was wrapped in mattresses. As we stood around waiting for the races to begin with our umbrella’s raised, there were mixed feelings of nerves and excitement.
Lacey Graham representing the Year 7 Girls was first up. Lacey lined up with almost 200 other contestants, spiked shoes at one end of the start line and bare feet at the other. Lacey gave it her all and ran a great first Aims Games cross country race, which she can be proud of.
Laura James and Mikaylee Barclay had to wait several races before their turn. After participating last year, they knew what to expect. It was going to be hard and fast! Both wanted to improve on their previous years result. The girls ran with great determination, pushing each other along and crossing the finishing line with a split second between them.
I was given one medal to award to a team player (I wish I had three!) and decided to award this to Mikaylee. I awarded her the medal for her determination and sheer grit she demonstrated on the day. Not only did she put herself forward to compete in this event again after a disappointing result last year and gaining a much improved result. She also didn’t give up after battling a problem toe for months which ended with surgery on Friday afternoon
We are super proud of you all, well done girls!
What did the girls have to say about this event?
Lacey Graham - I found it extremely hard but still had lots of fun. I am looking forward to improving my result next year.
Mikaylee Barclay - At the start I was really nervous but when I started running I became really tired so just focussed on getting to the end. I improved my results from last year.
Laura James - At the start I felt really nervous but when I got into the race I round my rhythm and my nerves went away. I did better than last year and I'm proud of myself.
