Sports Camp 2020

Natalie van Dijk —

We weren't sure we were going to make it to Sports Camp this year due to Covid Alert Levels but were relieved to hear the announcement on the last Monday of term that we were going to move down to alert Level 1. This meant we could attend a four day Sports Camp with a reduced number of schools from the following day.

On Monday the 21st of September 33 of our Year 7 and 8 students went to Waimarino as they were not allowed to go to Sports Camp. During the day the students were challenged with a wide variety of team building activities. It was a beautiful sunny day and it was a great way to start an extremely exciting week for the students.
We then travelled over on Tuesday morning to attend the Intermediate Sports Camp, which has been happening at Totara Springs for over 30 years. It was our school’s eleventh year of involvement in this event. The competition was extremely fierce as students competed in over thirty different sports. They pushed themselves outside of their comfort zones and participated in sporting events that ran from sun up until sun down.
Sports they were involved in were: Basketball, Croquet, Netball, Petanque, Football, Softball, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball, Athletics, Cross Country, Archery, Shooting, Frisbee Golf, Hole in one Golf, Kayaking, Swimming, Indoor Hockey, Indoor Football, Bowls, Darts, Chess, Caged Soccer, Wall Ball, Rock Climbing, Mini Golf
We were so proud of how well our students competed across the various codes - they made many semi-finals / finals and were competitive in many events.

Here is what some of our Tall Poppies had to say about their Sports Camp this year:
My highlight of sports camp was winning indoor hockey because it came down to two people and when we scored the goal everyone came down from the stands and congratulated us, it was a great night. (Bb Year 8)
My highlight from sports camp was winning indoor bowls against Rototuna because they had won most of their sports and the skip from Rototuna said that he was perfect. (Jorja Year 8)
My highlight from sports camp was cage football against Rototuna. I needed to score 4 goals to win and I scored 5 and the other guy scored 1 winning 8-7. (Josh.C Year 7)
My highlight from sports camp was playing volleyball for the first time, because even though we didn’t do very good it was still fun! (Ember Year 7)
My highlight from sports camp was winning indoor hockey because we did really well and we bet Rototuna. (Casey Year 8)
My highlight from sports camp was playing indoor football and getting into the semis. In the semis we scored 3 and they scored 4. We were about to score again but they blew the whistle. (Josh T Year 7)
My highlight from sports camp was coming runners up for table tennis and getting into the semis for croquet and petanque. (Ava P Year 8)
My highlight from sports camp was cage soccer when me and Jorja were watching people on the screen and Libby started dancing. (Zoe Year 8)
My highlight of sports camp was playing hockey because there were really competitive teams. I also enjoyed the bowls and wall ball. (Isabelle Year 7)
My highlight was getting into the finals for indoor football and also winning indoor hockey. (Hannah Year 7)
My highlight was getting into the semi finals for girls basketball. I also enjoyed wall ball because the other teams were tough and played well, but it was very fun. (Ava D Year 7)
My highlight from sports camp was playing netball against two teams even though we did not get through to the semi finals. (Summer Year 7)
My highlight from sports camp was playing wall ball and getting quite far through. (Larissa Year 7)
