After a rainy week post tropical-storm Lola, the sun was on our side for Year 5-8 athletics on Thursday.

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. Students have been practising their track and field events all term in the lead-up. Despite a few of the practices being rained off, it was a hugely successful day with many students setting personal best records. The air was humming with pride and sportsmanship. “It was very awesome; very fun getting outside and letting all your energy out,” says Nate, Year 5.

In the morning, long jumpers and sprinters flew through the air. High jumpers and shot putters tested out their explosive strength. Discus and cricket-ball throwers reached incredible distances. Whether their goal was to get a top placing or set a new personal record, it felt like everyone gave 110%. “Losing isn’t losing if you had fun!” says Milly, Year 6. “I loved seeing my friends do so well,” says Luca, Year 5. “I feel like I’ve been training my whole life and I finally won!” tells Hollie, Year 6. “My favourite was high jump,” says Heath, Year 5. “You have to push yourself to jump really high”.

After lunch, the whole school got together to cheer on the sprint finalists and the house relays. The atmosphere was electric. An excellent day all round, and a reminder to us all that getting stuck in and giving something a go always results in a lot of fun. Well done Tauriko!
