Tall Poppies Technology

Jo Te Whaiti —

For the past few weeks the Tall Poppies have been going to Tauranga Primary for Tech.

There are three things you can do at Tech and they are: Food Tech, Soft Tech and Hard Tech. The Tall Poppies go to Tech four times a term and each term we switch to a different kind of Tech. If you start in Soft Tech the first term, in the second term you would switch to Food Tech and after you have completed your third term activity then you loop back into the first subject you started in, except if you are in Soft Tech in which you change into Biotech which is where you make bath bombs, lip gloss, soap etc...

This week, Hard Tech made a pocket knife using aluminum, drills, saws, files and Sharpies. Food Tech made ‘Powers Out’ fritters and the fritters were cooked on a tin can using a portable gas cooker underneath. They were made out of egg powder, slim milk powder, baking soda, baking powder, vegetables, flour, salt and pepper, spices and fresh herbs. In Soft Tech they made a first aid kit using calico, curtain fabric, elastic, edge binding, webbing and a sewing machine.

Each term there is a different topic and what we make depends on that topic. This term the topic was surviving in a disaster so we made everything based around surviving after a disaster.
