Te Wiki o te reo Maori
From Monday 9th to Friday 13th of September we will be celebrating Maori Language Week.
Māori Language week has been celebrated every year since 1975.
Te Wiki o te reo Maori is an opportunity to celebrate, promote and encourage the use of te reo Maori. Every minute of every hour of every day is a Māori language minute – we can choose to use te reo – every time we do, even just a ‘Kia ora!’ contributes to revitalisation.
We have activities planned throughout the week for all of our tamariki to take part in. Please see the flyer for more details and encourage your child to take part.
Over the course of the week we will be putting together a display showing the iwi connections of our students. Notes were sent home on Friday with students in our system who identify as Maori. These have the details we have on file of any tribal connections. Please check these over and add/amend and return to school as soon as possible. If your child has Maori ancestry and you did not receive a note, please email Jo Te Whaiti at jtewhaiti@tauriko.school.nz and we will make sure one is sent out to you.
What can you do to contribute to te reo Māori revitalisation:
- Make te reo welcome in your home & workplace
- Make an effort to pronounce Māori words correctly when speaking English
- Learn a little, use a little
- Learn more, and use what you know
- Keep improving your language, and share what you know
