Kane's First Pheasant.

Jo Te Whaiti —

Read all about how Kane caught his first ever pheasant.

It was the 3rd of June and Dad and I were going to Rotoiti Forest to do some pheasant shooting. It was 10 o'clock in the morning and me and Dad had arrived at Rotoiti Forest. Dad loaded his gun and I helped load the other gun. Then we pushed the safety buttons on the guns and we were off.

We were coming up to a forestry block and suddenly two pheasants ran across the road. I jumped out of the truck and the pheasants ran into the bush. I could see the female pheasant but I couldn’t see the male. I didn’t shoot the female because you are not allowed to shoot them.

I ran in to the bush and had one shot then the pheasants ran back a bit more. I had another two shots and then we let Sam, our dog, off to try to find it but he couldn't so we got him onto the back of the ute.

Not long after we were going up the road. Suddenly another pheasant ran across the road. I jumped out of the truck and had 3 shots at it but I missed. While I was loading the gun Dad had another three shots at them too but he missed. So me and Dad carried on up the road.

We went up a drive and there were another two fat cock pheasants sitting on the road but we couldn't shoot them because there was a house there so we carried on up.

At the end of the road we turned around and drove back down the same stretch of road that we had had those other shots at the other pheasants, and suddenly, as soon as we got out on the road, another three pheasants ran across the road!

I had three shots but I missed so we carried on down the road. I could see it sitting in the bush so I jumped out of the truck and it took off. I had one shot at it and nailed it! I ran at the pheasant and grabbed it and it attacked me. I grabbed it and brought it back to the truck.

I felt happy and proud that I had got my first pheasant. We are going to take it to the taxidermist to get it stuffed.
