Classes for 2024

Suzanne Billington —

Staffing for next year's classes means we look forward to another amazing year next year.

In 2024 the structure of the school will change slightly due to aligning ourselves with the nationwide New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) Refresh that is taking place. This will also help us to manage the numbers of students we know we will have next year and the staffing that the Ministry of Education has allocated us in relation to this.

Progression in the NZC is now organised in Year 1 - 3, Year 4 - 6 and Year 7 & 8 bands. We will have two teams in our school next year.

The Year 1 - 3 team will be lead by Lisa Rose

The Year 4 - 8 team will be lead by Natalie van Dijk

We continue to have composite classes across the school. It is important that we all understand that we employ highly effective teachers. Effective teachers know where their students are at in relation to their learning and design learning programmes to challenge and support students to move their next learning step. This means that no matter what "Year level" students are, teaching and learning is designed to be effective for that particular student. A large consideration for us when putting classes together, is therefore, not totally about the learning. All teachers will support students who need acceleration and will push and challenge students who need extension. Decisions are more around the team we are putting together in relation to the teacher/student combination, social and emotional considerations, friendships and learning relationships.

Next year, due to student numbers and staffing we have a composite Year 6 & 7 class. This is a change and therefore, I think I need to explain how this will work.

Specialist Technology: all Year 6, 7 and 8 students will now have specialist technology learning three full days per Term.

Camps: Rooms 10, 11 and 13 will go together on Camp. Rooms 7 & 12 will go together on camp. Sports Camp in the main will continue to be Year 7 & 8, but there may be some Year 6 students who could have the opportunity to attend this - just as we did this year.

Sports: Year 5 and 6 students will still attend West Cluster sporting events, Year 7 & 8 students will attend Tall Poppy events.

Competitions outside of school ( ePro8, Otago Problem Solving,Bay Maths, Tall Poppy Problem Solving, Ki-o-Rahi etc ) will continue to happen for the usual age groups as they have before.

This means the Year 7 & 8 students will continue to have their usual Intermediate Experience, just as they have previously.

Should you have any questions at all about the organisation, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me principal@tauriko.school.nz  (021) 500 103.
