Mōku te Awatea: Kura-ā-Iwi establishment 2000

Kāhui Tū Māia —

Ko wai hoki mātou? He aha e motuhake ai te kura nei?

Who are we and what is our mission? What is our point of difference?

We were established in 2000 as the first Kura ā-Iwi of Aotearoa.

The Kura ā-Iwi concept was conceived and designed by our Poutoko, Matua Pem Bird. There are now more than 30 such kura throughout Aotearoa.

Kura ā-Iwi are designated character schools that were created as an alternative Māori medium model of education to ensure that Iwi culture, language, and identity not only survives in this modern age but thrives.

Kura ā-Iwi by their very nature are the Poutiaki and Poukōkiri of Iwi-tanga.

We are proud Poutiaki of Ngāti Manawatanga and as such provide Uri with a solid grounding in all aspects of Ngāti Manawatanga.

We are unique in that we follow our own Ngāti Manawa curriculum, which is the implementation of our founding document, 'Mōku te Awatea'.

We align both Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, the national curriculum document for all Māori Medium schools, and the New Zealand Curriculum documents to our Ngāti Manawa curriculum.
