REMINDER: Student Cellular Devices at School Procedures
As you are aware the new Government has brought in new legislation regarding students bringing cell phones and cellular devices to school. This campaign has been called - "Phones Away for the Day". The regulations require that schools must ensure students do not use or access a phone or cellular device while they are attending school, including during lunchtime and breaks. This includes students who are on a school event outside the school grounds.
At this stage we believe our current policy and procedures meet the new legislative requirements, however, as more information is provided we will consult and update you with any key changes.
To ensure we find the balance with connectivity between our students and parent/caregivers (before and after school) and ensure we meet our legislative requirements we thought it would be timely to remind you all of our Student Cell Phone (Cellular Device) at School Procedures.
1. All cell phones will be handed into the school office upon arrival at school.
2. If a student's cell phone is sighted by a staff member during school hours, staff will support, and check that the student has handed the cell phone into the school office.
3. If a student fails to comply with handing the cell phone into the office a member of staff will contact the parent/caregivers to come and collect the cell phone from their child.
4. Parents/caregivers will be notified if their child has breached the new legislative requirements and has used a cell phone during school hours.
REMINDER - All smartwatches need to be turned to school mode settings.
We continue to have a high percentage of students who are bringing cell phones to school. We understand that cell phones are an important tool students use to communicate with parents/caregivers before and after school. As we know Cell Phones and\/or Cellular Devices can also be a Health & Safety Risk if used inappropriately, especially with growing national reports of online bullying.
We would appreciate it if you could discuss this with your children if they bring a cell phone to school for before and after-school communication purposes.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
