Māori Language Week | Te wiki o te reo Māori

Tony Grey —

This week (9-15 September) is Māori Language Week.

Kia Kaha te reo Māori is the theme for this year’s Māori Language Week.

"Kia Kaha" is a well known phrase in New Zealand, meaning "be strong"  So, when we say "Kia Kaha te Reo Māori", we’re saying - "Let’s make the Māori language strong".

Te wiki o te reo Māori provides an opportunity for us to celebrate and learn te reo Māori which we will be doing every day this week with different activities for our tamariki.  This included a special a special Te Reo sing-a-long puppet show on Tuesday.

The Te Reo Māori Flight Time were also welcomed onto our local marae, Hukanui Marae on Wednesday. Matua Ted (Kaumatua) shared his knowledge around the rich cultural history of the marae and Ngāti Wairere.

Our Māori Language week will conclude with a special Wā Ngākau (assembly) on Friday at 9am.
