Research Participants Wanted!

Annelore Spieker —

Kia ora. Olá! My name is Annelore Spieker, and I am part of Te Ao Mārama school whānau.

My daughter studies in Kāhu Tahi and my youngest daughter will soon be joining Pūkeko. I am also a PhD student at the University of Waikato, in the Screen & Media Studies department. I am looking for parents* and children to participate in my PhD research. I’m interested in how children develop ideas about cultural identity through watching movies (mainly in Disney animated movies).

Participants:
Children must be between 7 and 10 years old (boys and girls) and must have watched Disney’s Moana.
*Parents or any family member close to the child are welcome to participate.

The data collection:
Every step of the data collection will happen on the date and time that best suit the participants. The completion will be online.

Steps of the data collection:
First: online survey completed by the parent/whānau.
Second: one-on-one interview (online) with parent/whānau (via Zoom) - this is optional.
Third: an online survey with a one-on-one interview (online) with children/tamariki (via Zoom).

Ethics approval:
Research has approval from the Human Research Ethics Committee from the University of Waikato. Reference number FS2018-32.
The research has also been tested in two pilots.

Rewards:
At the end of the data collection, all participants will go in a draw to win a $50 gift card from The Warehouse/The Warehouse Stationery. There will be two prizes of $50.
Every adult participant will get a scratch-off lottery ticket.
Every child participant will go to a second draw to win a $10 gift card to spend at The Warehouse Stationery/The Warehouse. There will be ten prizes of $10 for the children.
