Additional Learning Ideas

Sally Grylls-Thomas —

Well, here we are again, juggling home life, work life and learning from home. Our teachers are working hard to provide opportunities for learning, connection and fun in a way that is manageable for all whānau and households.

Things that we are doing to support you:

  • ICE Time challenges are on our website. Use older challenges or other team’s challenges if you want some more challenges.
  • It is sometimes useful to plan a day with some structure and routine; there are examples of timetables that you can use or create your own. Plan in times for getting outside, doing something active, reading together and connecting with someone.
  • Regular emails and video messages from teachers.
  • Regular catch ups through Google Meet

We do appreciate, that for some parents juggling work commitments, it is good to have something extra up your sleeve. The following are just some ideas you could try:

Maths
🔗 Cool Maths Games lots of interactive games here for children to try

🔗 Times Table Games

  • Cooking is great for learning about maths concepts.
  • Collecting, grouping, ordering objects develops maths concepts too. Try groups of two or five; Can you count in twos? in fives?

Reading
🔗 Sunshine Online; this is a really great platform and is often referenced in our ICE Time challnge sheets. Login; teaomarama. Password; sunshine

🔗 Literacy Online has digital copies of Ministry reading resources. Ready to Read and Junior Journals; these have audio to listen to.

🔗 The Literacy Shed has activity packs for reading and writing. These activities are based on short stories as films. Children will need support with these to access the activities to go alongside the short films.

Writing
A good point for parents to remember; for our younger learners, planning and telling a story orally is more than okay. Oral language is the beginning of all literacy, developing creativity in their oral language is a great help to their writing.

🔗 Scholastic Story starters;

🔗 Story Starters; watch these stories as videos and students write their own ending.

Writing lists, wish lists, planning a trip; where would you go? What would you do?

The Ministry also has ‘Helping at Home’ resources for Reading, Writing and Maths:

Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6

Please reach out to your child’s whānau teacher if you have any queries.
