Last night John Parsons presented a workshop for our parents. John is NZ's leading expert on digital safety for children.
Below are some key pieces of advice (John will also be sharing a lot more information, and we will share these in future newsletters):
- Do not let your child take their technology into their bedroom (ages 5-13)
- Photos showing their bedroom, bathroom, or pyjamas should not be online
- Teach your child that their body is unique and belongs to them
- Be your child's guardian, not necessarily their friend
- The absolute critical importance of sleep, for learning and health reasons
- Is your child sleeping enough for their age? Are they moving enough? Are they socialising with others?
- John spoke very positively about what he had seen at our school, and advocates for the importance of play, and play based learning
- Own your right to parent your child particularly between the ages of 8-14, when "power struggles" may start to occur.
