Meet our "Worm Warriors"
The team in charge of caring for our worm farms.
Our Worm Warriors are a dedicated team of Kererū students who work with Miss K to manage our school worm farms.
During lockdown last year we were unable to feed our worms so we have been spending time building back our worm population. We feed the worms vege scraps , fruit cores and peels from Kererū students fruit break snacks and sometimes shredded paper from the office.
In the summer we sometimes need to add some water to our worms to make sure they don't dry out and we try to keep them warm with newspaper and sack blankets in the winter.
The worms have begun to produce worm juice and castings which we collected for the garden in the summer time. They produce less in the winter. When we get the castings ready we need to sort through to make sure we haven't got any runaway worms and if fine one we carefully pop them back in the worm farms. We are hoping we will start to get enough worm juice to have a worm juice sale later in the year!
We wear gloves when we work with the worms so our warm skin doesn't hurt their cold bodies and so that our hands don't get covered in food waste!
We love lifting some larger fruit items to see the worms all having a fest underneath!
