On 20/9/22, 8-9 schools were competing at Waimairi-iri Kahui Ako Minecraft Competition at Breens Intermediate. Four year levels competed for the championship, year 5 & year 6 year 7 and 8. The host was going to give each school a thing to build.

The task was to build a Wheke (which is an octopus). Competitors learnt about this traditional Maori myth of the story of Kupe and the giant Wheke. At Breens we competed in a big room with an indoor basketball hoop.

The schools competed in an alphabetical order. They had 10 minutes to build and a 10 minute break with a total time of 20 minutes for four schools. They did them together at the same time. Year 5s competed first then the Year 6s. The winner for two year levels received a trophy. The trophy had a sword stuck in a piece of wood. The winner of two year levels also got Lego prizes.

We interviewed Ayush, age 10, from Burnside Primary and he said he was looking forward to building an Octopus.

We interviewed Thomas, age 10, from Burnside Primary and he said he preferred to build a fancy house instead of an Octopus but he liked this competition because we got to use our imagination.

Thank you Mrs Taylor from Breens, and the judges for organising the competition for all the children and a big thank you to the people that helped transport all the lovely children to Breens. We really appreciate all the hard work you’ve done and hope that there is another e-Sport competition next year. Thank you!
