Wonderful Wainui Camp!

The School Reporters —

Reported by Yuchen, Jojo, Thoma and Isabel B

Day 1

On the 22nd of March The Kāhu Team went to Wainui Camp! The Kāhu Team had 9 exciting activities to do on camp. Kayaking, Shelter Building, Raft Building, Coasteering, Flying Fox, Self Led UHF Radios, Orienteering, Beach Explore and whole team games. When the Kāhu Team arrived at camp they had time to unpack their heavy luggages when they got off the bus and into their cabins on day 1.

Then some Kāhu students had an interview about how they were feeling during their first day on camp. First we interviewed Lina, Shaun, Rosa and Tanay about how they were feeling.

Lina said: ”I was very nervous and scared when I got to the Wainui campsite.

Shaun said: “I was very sad at the camp site because I threw up during the trip, on the bus to Wainui camp.”

Rosa W said: “I felt excited and I wanted to go and look around to explore the campsite more.”

Tanay said: “I felt excited because I wanted to do fun activities and coasteering and more fun things.”

After unpacking and exploring the cabins the Kāhu Team gathered in the yard and played some games to start off the fun. But unfortunately the rain started to pour so Kāhu all put on their waterproof jackets then went into their activity groups: Group A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and I. Kāhu Team were all ready for their first rotation!

Everyone went their separate ways and started doing their own activity. Because of the rain Group B and Group C couldn’t do their activity, coasteering and kayaking so those groups did Flying Kiwi instead. The other groups, A, F, G, H and I started off strong. They got their rain jackets on and they were ready to go! On the second rotation, we interviewed 1 student Lily P.

Lily P said: ‘’I felt very happy because this is my first time doing my camp rotation.’’

After they finished their activities everyone had a little free time.

At 6:00pm everyone had a shower and later at 6:30pm it was time for dinner.

For dinner the Kāhu Team had nachoes with mince and sour cream with a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. When everyone had finished their dinner, they had chocolate cake for dessert. After dinner, everyone got into their pyjamas and brushed their teeth. At 8:00pm the Kahu Team had silent free time in their bunkrooms. We had a little interview about how the Kāhu students felt about the day. We interviewed 3 students, Jialu, Emily C and Miyuu A.

Jialu said: ¨I felt very hungry because I didn’t like the nachoes that much.¨

Emily C said: “I felt very tired after, because I did a 10 minute walk to the beach to have a Beach Explore and shelter building.”

Miyuu said: “I felt very weird and excited because it was the first day and I was going to sleep in a different bed. Also when it was very wet outside and I kept on slipping because of the mud, especially when I was doing the “Flying Kiwi."

DAY 2

On day 2, everybody was roughly awoken at 8:30am in the morning. At 8:50am we got dressed, then everyone had breakfast at 9:00am. Now you are probably wondering what was on the menu for breakfast. We had cereal, milk, yoghurt, along with toast, strawberry jam and other spreads.

When everyone finished eating their breakfast, it was time to get ready for their first rotation of the day. Group E's first rotation was raft building.

Jialu said: “It was very muddy and tying the knots was hard but I persevered and did it!”

Later on, all of the groups lined up and they were ready for their second rotation of the day. Group E’s second rotation was Shelter Building in the forest.

We interviewed Aamena and Isabella H about the shelter and raft building.

Isabella said: “Shelter building was fun but it was hard to find some very good sticks for the shelter.”

For the Raft building, Aamena said: “It was very hard for me to tie the ropes together and get the barrels to stay in place but it was very fun making the raft with my friends. Miyuu A, Lina A, Cohalu M and Josephine C.

In group C their first rotation was coasteering. They had to put on a stiff wetsuit, swimming togs, a helmet, lifejacket and close toed shoes in the water. We drove to the beach and we had to climb up and down rocks to reach our destination to go and swim in the ocean. The process was hard but it was also fun at the same time because we discovered a lot of tiny sea creatures in the tide pools like sea urchins, sea stars and sea anemones plus some weird looking kelp. When we got back to the cabins we all had a nice warm shower. After all of our activities we were prepared for dinner at 6:00pm.

By 6:00pm everyone gathered at the dinning hall and was ready for dinner. What was that? Oh you want the menu for dinner? Got it. The menu for dinner was a chicken stir fry and the dessert was vanilla ice-cream. We all ate happily together.

CAMP CONCERT

Remember earlier we had to go brush our teeth and get ready for bed? Normally we do that at 8:30pm but on Day 2 it was different because of the… CAMP CONCERT!

Camp Concert is a show that we do at the very last night of camp, When there are people singing, dancing, doing magic tricks and showing off their talents.

We interviewed Rosa W, Emily C and Isabel B who did the Camp Concert.

Rosa said: “I was so nervous when they called my group up to do our play but I overcame the fear and the nervousness, because the second thing that I knew was people cheering for our group.”

Emily said: “I was in Rosa’s group and I started our play with a few jokes and lines. I was nervous because I wasn’t comfortable saying my lines in front of the whole Kāhu Team, along with my heart beating so hard that I could hear it thumping. But in the end it wasn’t so bad at all.”

Isabel said: “I was quite nervous because I sang the song Dandelions all by myself without a microphone. Except for that everyone clapped loudly after my performance, also on day 3 people asked me if I was the person that sang the song last night.”

After the kids performed it was time for the teachers to perform. That night the teacher sang ⟪Let It Go⟫ and it was super fun and funny because almost everyone jumped on the stage and sang with the teachers. It nearly turned into a Disco Night!!

DAY 3

At the start of day three, the Kāhu team got woken up by the song called «Wake Me Up Before You Go Go» at 7:00am. It was very loud and the whole Kāhu Team woke up. It is their last day of camp and so far they all had a very good time. We interviewed Cohalu and Yuchen  and asked them how they felt on the last day of camp.

Cohalu said: “I felt a little bit sad because I didn’t want to leave Wainui Camp. I was also happy because in a minute and hour I will be able to see my parents again.”

Yuchen said: ¨ I felt very sad that I left Wainui Camp because I had a very outstanding time at camp and because of the fun activities.’’

Then two instructors from the campsite got a long rope out and two cones and a piece of fabric and tied it in the middle on the rope. The Kāhu team all got into their activity group and they all started to do the tug of war.

At the end there was teachers vs the students and... drumroll please... the Kāhu students won!

Then the team had time to pack their things and they had a little help from the parents. Everyone got ready and they had lunch. The lunch menu was a spinach, ham and mayo sandwich, a chewy muesli bar and a healthy piece of fruit. Then they hopped on the bus then went down the mountain and on the road and back down to Christchurch.

When they hopped for the bus all of the Kāhu team's parents were already ready to go home. We interviewed Josephine and Yiting about how camp was.

Yiting said: "I felt very happy to be back home with my family again.”

Josephine said: "I felt very happy and sad because I was happy to be home but I also wanted to stay at camp.”

A shout out to all the parents that came to camp. Thank you for coming and taking all of your time and spending it with the Kāhu students. They all say that it was the best camp ever with you all, and that it was very fun because you all came to camp. Thank you to the teachers for staying up late and looking after us as well!

From the Kāhu Team 😃
