Principal's Post - week 10, Term 3.

Jenny Washington —

Tōtika: Balance. Mahia i runga i te rangimārie me te ngākau māhaki. With a peaceful mind and respectful heart, we will always get the best results.

It’s hard to believe that we are in the last week of the term. The PTA have organised a Quiz Night tonight at 7:30pm at the Elmwood Tavern we hope you enjoy this event.

We would like to remind all families that the summer uniform is required in the fourth term alongside school hats. We also encourage families to apply sunscreen prior to coming to school and placing sunscreen in bags so children are able to re-apply, our teachers will remind children to do this.

Soiree evening

We would like to thank Mrs Beckers-Yu for organising and liaising with our itinerant music teachers for our soiree evening last week. Over the evening we had 43 students performing guitar, piano and the flute. We would like to acknowledge our itinerant music teachers for taking the time to allow our students to perform. Thanks to Santiago Samonta (Guitar),

Heather Connell (Violin/Theory), Nahzee Malekiamin (Piano), Laura Auld (Flute/Recorder), Josie Stanford (Clarinet) and Andrew Couper (Drums). We would also like to acknowledge the work of Kate Fleming who is taking a chamber group every Wednesday with a group of our students.

Middle Distance races

We had a great time with our Middle Distance Races yesterday afternoon. The children all did a fantastic job and we were all impressed with their perseverance and positive attitudes. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support and encourage the children.

This event is part of Athletics and the results will be added to the certificates next term once we have also had our Athletics Day.

Education Brief

All schools in Christchurch are part of the Christchurch Renewal Programme. The funding for property in these schools has sat with the Ministry of Education since the earthquake unless a school has an immediate health and safety issue. Once the school is part of the programme they are required to write an Education Brief, this describes the school and how the money that they receive will go towards improving the current school property. In Te Ara Maurea Roydvale Schools’ case we expect to have enough money to renovate our spaces, we will certainly not be expecting a full rebuild.

The Education Brief is then submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval and a design team is then allocated to the school. Once the design team is appointed then decisions are made with the board on where the money will be spent. Then there is a process of appointing project managers and builders.

This is a very simplified version of a very complex process. The MOE have a site for you to view which explains this in more detail.

Board news

Board Chair

At our last board meeting Murray Dickinson, who has been Board Chair for four years resigned from the Board chair position to allow for some succession planning. We would like to thank Murray for this significant amount of service, the dedicated time he has put into the position and for his commitment to the school.

At the last meeting the board voted Mr Andrew Given as the new Board Chair.

Board Elections

The Board are starting to prepare for elections for June 2019. We have appointed a Returning Officer and there will be three positions available on the board from June 2019. At the beginning of next year there will be correspondence from the board regarding these elections.

PTA

The term has been busy with fundraising.  We would like to thank the PTA for co-ordinating the chocolate sales and organising the Quiz night tonight.  Thank you to Tash and her PTA committee we have really appreciated your continued support.

Kapahaka

We were delighted to have some of our Year 3 -6 students perform at the Tūhono Kapahaka festival on Thursday held at St Andrews school. Matua Steve composed our haka for the night. It was very exciting opportunity for the school to showcase our new haka composed by Matua Steve and choreographed by our students.
