Deb Young —

Cantamath, Air Force Museum, Cultural Festival and Winter Sports.

Term 3 is a long and cold term but super busy with lots of things happening.

This term we had 2 Cantamath Competitions. The first was held at Wolfbrook Arena and this was the first time Te Aratai had teams from Year 7 and 8 in the Canterbury Cantamaths Competition. I was super proud of the teams that represented us.

Year 8 - Ishaan Ali, Gabriel Mayer, Ariah Wagerman, Jake Jenkins

Year 7 - Tāne Norton, Mayson Kumar, Josh Cusi, Adam Ibasitas

The following week we entered 4 teams in the Tamai Cantamath and one of our Year 7 teams won with a Golden Ticket, all answers correct within the time frame. This was Tāne Norton, Nick Reid-Higgens, Connor Moran and Mayson Kumar.

The Year 7’s visited Wigram Airforce Base and the team there was super impressed with the behaviour, respect and interest shown on the day. It is a very cool place to visit if you have any time during the holidays.

We wrapped up Winter Sports with a tournament. The weather was very cold but we went and played to the best of our ability. It is great that we get to represent our school in the different codes of sport. This year we played Netball, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Basketball and Badminton.

We had our Speech Competitions in Week 8 and our students were amazing, very hard to select the overall winner. The Year 8 winner was Flynn Binnie and the Year 7 winner was Emiliano Gomez Bernal.

In Week 9 we also performed for the first time in the Aupaki Cultural Festival Here at Te Aratai. The kapahaka students had only been practising for the past 7 weeks and they were amazing, we are super proud of the mana they displayed. The Pasifika group shone with some true superstars in the group. We have another performance coming up at the beginning of Term 4.

A massive thank you to our Learning Assistant Rosalia for making our uniforms in such a tight timeframe. Ngā mihi.

Term 4 looks just as action-packed, culminating in our Tāhuhu Prizegiving and Year 8 Camp. Information will be sent home at the beginning of Term 4.
