Active As

Jesse Harding —

Sport New Zealand is supporting our kura with up to 100k for the next three years to improve rangatahi participation in movement!

Our kura has been chosen to receive up to $100,000 each year, for the next three years in the hope of raising rangatahi well-being and learning through increased physical movement / activity.

The project is called Active As and it is to help create physical activity opportunities that suit students in our kura. It’s being supported by Sport New Zealand - Ihi Aotearoa. A big mihi to them, Sport Canterbury and School Sport Canterbury for the support! What are the aims?
The aims are:

  • To enhance the well-being of rangatahi by being physically active

  • To increase the physical activity levels of rangatahi, particularly those that are less active

  • Have fun, connect and continue to learn at school

Research shows that physical activity levels drop by 46 per cent in teenage years. But two-thirds of rangatahi would like to be more active than they currently are. Getting active is great for our physical and mental wellbeing. Being physically active in ways that we enjoy can have a massive impact on the way we connect with others, the way we learn, and the way we feel about ourselves. But sometimes it’s just too hard and all sorts of things can get in the way.

In the next couple of months, we are going to be observing what physical activity is happening in the school, running interviews and focus groups, having classroom discussions and getting data from our students in the Rangatahi Voice survey that was sent to their school gmail.

Once we have all this data, we will start planning how to use this money to help increase physical activity for the students in our school.

If you have an idea of how we could reduce barriers to participation in physical activity or a cool idea that would get more people active, please feel free to speak to Zach Derham, Anahera Smith, Hinemaia Paringatai-Dallas, Lilith Ross, Lena Norton, Mr Harding or Jade.
