Linwood College at Ōtākaro: preparing for Thursday

The moving trucks have been and gone. Staff have been unpacking and setting up the learning spaces for the arrival of students on Thursday and the first full timetabled learning day, Friday.

It's all looking good.  As I said in a previous article, we are very fortunate to have our temporary, and to be completely truthful, better site to be in. In the words of one parent, we are getting an upgrade before we get our upgrade. And of course, we are leaving in order to return. All this is occurring for our complete whole-school rebuild. Truly, it is LC's turn.

Confirming that this Thursday 25 July is the first time on site for students, 8.40am, for the mihi whakatau. After this welcome the students will be given their new timetables, orientation, maps and tours. Seniors are released 11am and juniors 12pm.

Friday is a full timetabled teaching day, Period 1 - 8.45am, the usual time.

For students catching the bus from Aldwins Rd, the buses will leave there promptly at 8.20am starting Thursday.

2019-2020 Pathway and Option Selection Guide

By Week 7, Term 3, Years 10, 11 and 12 students need to choose their options for 2020.

Timeline for Pathway and Option Selection Process:

Term 3:  Weeks 2-4

We encourage you to sit down with your child and see what they have entered on Career Central. This website helps students identify potential career pathways which will guide their option selection.

Term 3:  Weeks 4-6

Students should familiarise themselves and their whānau with the Pathway information under the Teaching and Learning tab on the new school website (currently under development) including:

❏ the options on offer

❏ the entry recommendations

❏ whether the option is UE approved

❏ the requirements for UE, including UE Literacy and Numeracy

For Year 12s going into Year 13, the information includes whether the Yr 13 option is a module or full year course.

Students will select their options and students, parents/caregivers and kaiārahi will discuss identified pathways and selected options at the Academic Conferences in Week 8, Term 3, and sign off the options that have been selected (Years 11 and 12).

Important Considerations for parents/whānau:

Parents/whānau are the most important influencers on young people’s career development.

● While some options are necessary to keep a pathway open, students should be encouraged to take at least one creative option. It is important for students to leave school confident about expressing themselves in public arenas, and it is also important for students to develop talents and skills across a range of curriculum areas.

● While it is helpful for you to give advice to and guide your child, it is also important for you to recognise the skills, talents and interests of your child and allow him/her to develop a plan for the future. Whānau have an important role to play in this pathway process because they know their children so well.

Note: Tertiary pathways at ARA will be offered to Senior students. These pathways require the students to be at ARA for one or two days a week.

You are welcome to contact the Careers’ Advisors/ Deans/ Senior Leaders to ask questions or make a time to meet to discuss your child’s options further.
