Waiporoporo House Deans' Report

Lukas Davidson and Sig Koop —

Kia ora, and warm greetings from Waiporoporo house.

For many of our learners it has been a positive term with plenty of learning and opportunities on offer. Outside of the classroom there have been several celebrations, not least the Polyfest where our students put in an exceptional performance. We are blessed to be part of a community where so many cultures are represented and able to showcase our talents in this way.

Our subject teachers have been busy organising trips around the Canterbury region. There is nothing like getting out of the classroom and into the community to bring a subject to life. Our Geography students have enjoyed a trip to Akaroa, our Biology students have been to Arthurs Pass and there have been several visits to University for our seniors to explore future pathways. We have also been lucky enough to have several guest speakers visit the school including former corporal Willie Apiata the only living New Zealander to have received the Victoria Cross for his services to the NZ Military.

We have been continuing to reinforce school expectations around uniform, attendance and classroom conduct. In particular, we have been focussing on attendance, recognising that this has a direct link to academic success. As we near the end of the term we have also been focussing on goal setting for our senior students. Mr Davidson has had several conversations with seniors who are eager to do well in their year level. He has enjoyed discussing how they might set strategies to work towards success.

Finally, we would like to thank all our learners for their enthusiasm and mahi in term one. For our Year 11’s in particular it can be daunting starting NCEA. With the effort you have put in comes rewards in the form of NCEA credits but also a well-earned break.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holidays
