Get2Go Challenge 2023

Briar Dumelow —

We had two teams represent us this year at the Get2Go Challenge.

Over the last few months, the Te Aratai College Junior Adventure Racers have been working to prepare for the annual Regional Get2Go Challenge event. The Get2Go Challenge, organised by Hillary Outdoors, is a full day of adventure race activities for a maximum of 24 teams of 8 students. For the Canterbury region, it takes place in Christchurch out at The Groynes and Lake Rua in Roto Kohatu Reserve each year.

The Get2Go Challenge event is designed to be an introduction for Year 9-10 students to activities and scenarios encountered in real adventure racing events. It gets them working together in their teams to problem solve and participate in activities that require many different skill sets all while inspiring and supporting each other to race hard and fair. This encourages the development of skills needed in an expedition-style adventure race.

This year the event took place on Friday 15th September with a serious southerly wind blasting across Lake Rua and the Groynes. It was an absolutely freezing cold day!! Teams worked on an outdoor problem-solving activity as well as paddling SUPs and canoes at Lake Rua and then also at The Groynes for team orienteering and mountain biking exercises.

The 2023 Te Aratai College junior adventure race squad was represented across two teams. All had an absolutely fantastic day despite the cold conditions showing great teamwork, grit, determination and perseverance, while also having a lot of fun to get some solid results.
