Girls with Hi-Vis

Visiting the New Metro Sports Centre Parakiore: a building in progress.

On 21st June, Ruta Fuaolefau Pesefea and Jett Seaton, two wāhine interested in careers in the trades participated in the Girls in Hi-Vis day at Parakiore. Students from a range of schools from Christchurch heard a kōrero by experts from around Christchurch about the local construction and infrastructure industries.

The students had a shared kai and then headed into the Parakiore site for 4 different hands-on activities, demonstrations, and tours of the brand-new facility under construction. The Parakiore facility is truly impressive and it will be a fabulous place to visit once completed.

The students got to experience a day in the life of a building construction site, participating in a wall and scaffold building exercise, visiting the pools and pumps and completing an electrical demo and completing a tour of the entire facility.

The day ended with the students hearing stories from women who work on the facility in a variety of trades, sharing their journies from school and to trades, university and careers in engineering, human resources and project management.
