Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata

Deborah Young —

Tāhuhu Students getting involved in Te Ao Māori.

Some of our Tāhuhu students were lucky enough to have the opportunity to create their own taonga working with our fabulous instructors John, Ihakara and Trevor from Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata.

Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata is a pounamu carving programme and journey of self-discovery for rangatahi: "Our pounamu carving experience takes you on a journey of the whakapapa of Pounamu. We will work with you to create your own piece of Pounamu. Each ākonga will learn about the pounamu and what it means to be a kaitiaki of this taonga. We will surround the pounamu making process with appropriate tikanga and reo Māori."

We spent 2 days learning, creating, making, and sharing with others an invaluable experience which was valued by all who participated.

The Tāhuhu students created one to gift to someone special and one for themselves. The patience, perseverance and care witnessed of these tamariki was to be admired.

Tino pai tamariki ma!
