Seaweek Poetry Masterclass

Nick Colville —

On Friday, March 12th four of our Junior students attended a masterclass in writing poetry.

Accompanied by Jodine Hardwick, LCŌs Head of English, our juniors got the opportunity to learn poetry techniques that can be applied across all of their writing, such as word sounds and rhymes, specific vocabulary, and injecting fun into their work. The event was held at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre and all that attended were invited to enter their polished poem in the Seaweek Poetry Competition.

The theme was, I am the sea and the sea is me. Winning entries will be announced and displayed from the 22-29 March at a central venue (TBC) & via Facebook and The School for Young Writers website. Below is Cooper Atherton's entry:

Treasure?

What could be beneath the sea?

The sea of secrets

Treasure to some, trash to others

But I consider it a shining silver

I am talking about the viperfish

Teeth crooked like a rotten shipwreck

Scales so shiny, you can see them from a mile away

A variety of colours, navy, dark blue

Sting so painful it shivers through your skin

A secret to many, but a recurring spectacle to me

What could be beneath the sea?

The viper wields a spiky trident

A giant godly trident

But I don’t want to put my hand near it

Its tail could snap me into pieces in the blink of an eager eye
