Matariki Stars in Team Harakeke - Made out of Harakeke (flax)!

Ms Brickland —

Did you know there are many legends about the star cluster Matariki?

One of the most popular is that the star Matariki is the whaea (mother), surrounded by her six daughters, Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī and Waitā, and Ururangi.
Today, as part of our Matariki Celebrations, Whaea Angela came in to Team Harakeke to show us how to make Matariki Stars out of harakeke. First, Whaea Angela blessed the harakeke by saying a special karakia before cutting it. Then she showed us how to weave the harakeke into Matariki Stars! Kia Ora Whaea Angela - thank you for awhiing us!
