Other Documents Required for all Enrolments

Birth Certificate & Immunisation Documents

We must verify the child's date of birth, therefore the school is required to sight the original and retain a copy of your child's birth certificate. An immunisation certificate or the appropriately completed section in the ā€˜Well Child’ book is also required. If you have chosen not to have your children immunised, or only partially immunised, this is ok but we need to record these details.

Visas

If your child was not born in New Zealand, we require to sight the original Student or Resident Visa. If the child's parents were not born in NZ we also require both parent's passports and visas. If your child was born in New Zealand but isn't a New Zealand citizen we require a Certificate of Citizenship. Please bring these documents with you to be copied/scanned.

Classification of students at Te Kāpehu Riccarton School

When your child arrives at school he/she will be allocated a year classification. If they arrive before the 1st May, they will be classified as Year 1 and if they arrive any time after this, they will be classified as Year 0. This classification system is similar to the practice in all NZ schools. We want to ensure that our children do not leave for High School when they are too young. You may know that the Ministry has a different classification system. Their system uses the 1st July but this is used to calculate school funding and should not be confused with the school classification.

School Visits

New Entrant children (first school for 5 year olds) are invited to attend three pre-entry visits to their prospective classroom before starting school. These visits are usually during the three weeks prior to their fifth birthday and are arranged in consultation with the office.

The visits get your child used to class routines, the teacher and other learners in the class. The first visit starts at 8.55am and finishes at 11am. A parent (or someone they know well) is required to stay with their child on the first visit although some may need to stay on future visits. The second visit is one week later, from 8.55am - 12.30pm and the third, the following week, from 8.55pm - 3pm (all day). Some children benefit from extra visits, the New Entrant teacher will advise you after the first visit if it is recommended. Please bring morning tea for the second visit and morning tea and lunch for the third visit. Your child is welcome to wear their school uniform to the visits but this is not compulsory.

New Entrant children starting at the beginning of the year are invited to attend their visits in either November or at the start of the new year. Sometimes rooms and teachers change so this should be taken into consideration.

It can be tiring for a five year old to adjust to new routines and a longer school day, an earlier finishing time may be recommended by the teacher.

Out of Zone

If we have space we will hold a ballot for out of zone places, the dates are outlined in this article. Please note that we will only take out of zone enrolments where we have capacity and if the child already has siblings at the school. If you miss out on a place you can choose to either stay on a waiting list or be removed from the waiting list.

Please download, or collect, and complete an Out of Zone Application and forward it to the office. If your out of zone application is successful you will be required to complete an enrolment form and provide the supporting documents outlined below in the Other Documents Required for all Enrolments section.

Applications for out of zone enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

  • First priority This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary

  • Second priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.

  • Third priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.

  • Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.

  • Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.

  • Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
